Chapter 9

Katie spent a good long time on the floor of the Bikram room, reflecting on what had just happened. She probably should have felt ashamed at her behavior—at how easily she’d let go with a man she should have been annoyed with.

Instead, all she could do was grin up at the ceiling like an idiot.

She did feel guilt, although it registered like a muted hum in the background. She could easily justify this away. It wasn’t like AJ was the first man she’d slept with since Max. And she had full permission to play.

But this felt different than those past encounters—and even the potential one with Bradley. This felt more her own. Felt more selfish. A sexual itch that needed to be scratched.

She picked herself off the floor and went to the mirror. Her body glistened. Her hair was a mess. She’d definitely need a shower.

Her stockings, she was surprised to see, were still in good shape, although uncomfortable in the heat of the room. She touched her pussy, her fingertips lingering on the strip of trimmed auburn curls.

I prefer my sluts bare.

Aloud, she said, “Not going to happen.” It felt good to say, even without AJ there.

Quickly dressing, she stuffed her bra and panties into her bag. On her way down to the locker room, she felt like everyone who looked at her knew exactly what had just happened. They looked at her sweaty face and that she was still dressed in a suit, and had to know she’d just fucked a trainer upstairs. Her face was as red as her hair by the time she got into the locker room. She grabbed a towel, hastily stripped and slipped into a shower stall, washing away her shame. Or whatever.

At some point, though, as the water cascaded over her curves and she soaped away the sweat and smell of sex, Katie started smiling—and couldn’t stop.

Refreshed and redressed, she tucked everything but her suit and bra into her bag and stepped back into the gym, feeling much better.

She passed by the membership table, where Lilly was signing up a good-looking guy about her age. Like her, he wore a suit—a corporate world warrior looking to stay in his prime. She wondered if Lilly had given him as thorough a tour of the gym as AJ had.

Any guilt at the thought was gone. Instead, it was replace with an exhilarated bewilderment—did I really just do that?

Katie took it as a sign that the encounter was probably meant to be a one-time thing. Part of her even liked the idea of a one-night (or one-day) stand. Made it feel even more illicit. She breezed right by the membership desk and headed out the door.

The cold air was good for her. It helped her collect her thoughts and not act heatedly. The more she walked, the more she decided it was a good idea that she hadn’t joined the gym. She didn’t really have time for them anyway—not between work and Mya—and she still preferred the yoga studios she knew and trusted.
